William Shield died in Southernhay, Exeter on 25 Jun 1842. He served in the Royal Navy.
• As Captain of Windsor Castle, 98, he requested that a court martial be held to examine his conduct after a mutiny occurred on the ship (10 Nov 1794). He was honorably acquitted but removed from command of the ship. The mutineers were pardoned.
• As Captain of Audacious, 74, he took part in the Battle of Hyères (13 Jul 1795).
