• As Third Lieutenant of Resolution, he took part in James Cook's third voyage around the world.
• As Captain of Agincourt, 64, he took part in the Battle of Camperdown (11 Oct 1797).
• Tried by a court martial following the battle. He was charged with disobeying signals, cowardice, negligence, and disaffection. The charges were only partially proven. As a result, he was placed at the bottom of the post-captain's list and was never given another command.
