Naval History and Nautical Fiction Forum

This forum is a venue for people who wish to discuss topics related to naval operations during the period 1650-1850. Whether you have just developed an interest in the Age of Fighting Sail or consider yourself an old hand, you are welcome here.

Please spend some time looking around before you post. This is a moderated forum and there are a number of rules that everyone should follow (see below). If you do not like moderators or do not agree with the forum rules, then this site is probably not for you.

Please read the following rules / important information before you post to the forum.

Be polite and show respect for fellow posters.
If you disagree with someone, remember that they have a right to their own opinion. Do not post personal attacks, threaten, or harass other forum members.

Do not post anything that is obscene, racist, homophobic, sexist, promotes illegal activities, or promotes hate of any particular group.

Please post to the appropriate forum and stay on topic.
Off-topic, inappropriate, or irrelevant posts may be moved or deleted by the moderators. There is an off-topic / social forum (Around the Scuttle-Butt) for your convenience. Please do not abuse it. If you would like to carry on a long, personal discussion with a particular individual, please use email instead. Do not post jokes or virus warnings.

Political or religious discussion should be avoided unless it concerns people or events related to the age of sail.
There are more appropriate forums for discussions about current political events and religion elsewhere on the internet.

Quote only the relevant section of a post when replying.

Please do not post messages typed entirely in capital letters.
ALL CAPS is difficult to read and usually indicates a person is shouting.

Please do not post messages in net- or pirate-speak.

Do not post anything which violates copyright law unless you have written permission from the copyright holder to do so.
If you include an excerpt of an article or any other written piece in your post, please include the source and / or provide a link to it.

Do not post pictures unless they are absolutely necessary to illustrate a specific point.
Please crop and reduce it to a reasonable size.

Respect a person's privacy. Do not post addresses, phone numbers, email addresses or any other contact or personal information.

Advertisments / solicitations from businesses are not allowed and will be deleted.
The Marketplace is reserved strictly for transactions between individuals. If you would like a link to your commercial site added to the Sailing Navies website, please contact the webmaster at webmaster@sailingnavies.com with the details.

If you choose to use a signature, please keep it short (2-3 lines) and do not use graphic files.
Long / huge signatures can be irritating to readers and can slow page display time, especially for people with slower connections.

If you believe a poster is breaking the rules, do not confront the person directly on the forums.
Notify a moderator or the administrator. If we determine that a post violates the rules, we will make every effort to resolve the situation within a reasonable period of time.

The forums are moderated in order to ensure a welcoming and friendly environment. All of the moderators are volunteers and perform a valuable service. Please show them the proper respect. All moderators have the ability to edit, move, and delete posts when necessary. If you believe a moderator has acted inappropriately or unfairly, do not complain about it in the forums. Your post will be deleted. Please contact the moderator or site administrator via email instead. Please be patient, as we may not be able to respond immediately.

Sailing Navies reserves the right to edit, move, or delete posts as necessary and restrict or ban posters without prior notice or explanation. Failure to follow the forum rules may result in a temporary or permanent ban of the offending poster from the forum. Forum rules may be changed and / or amended at any time without prior notice.

Messages posted on the Sailing Navies forums remain the opinions of the individual posters and do not necessarily reflect the views of the forum administrators and moderators.
